The "helicopter pilot training squadron" was founded on March 8, 1996, after the need for training helicopter pilots within the HRZ was identified. It operated at the Lučko airbase (Zagreb) and was equipped with Mi-8 helicopters. Already in February 1997, the squadron was moved to the then 93rd Air Force Base (today's 93rd Wing) and equipped with Bell 206B Jet Ranger III helicopters, and in April it changed its name to "Helicopter Squadron".

The squadron's emblem is an owl, from which the motto of this unit can be read. The owl symbolizes wisdom and knowledge, and these are precisely the qualities that members of the Helicopter Squadron must have and that they should be able to pass on to the new generations of pilots that they are training.
