     Civilna garda (Španjolski: Guardia Civil) je u stvari žandarmerija i ima dvojnu funkciju (vojnu i policijsku). Kreirana je u nekoliko faza od 1835. do 1844. i konačno 1855. postaje operativna policijska snaga. Policijske zadatke počinju izvršavati odmah, još 1835, kada su te zadaće preuzeli od službe zvane Sveti Hermandad. Civilnu gardu često uspoređuju sa francuskim žandarima i talijanskim karabinjerima. Moto Guardie Civil je "El Honor es mi Divisa" "Čast je moj zaštitni znak".

    The Civil Guard, (Spanish Guardia Civil), is the Spanish gendarmery. It has both military and civilian functions. It was created in different stages from 1835 to 1844, and was finally established as an operational force in 1855. The policing done by the Civil Guard starting in 1835 was carried out earlier by the Holy Hermandad. As a police force, the Civil Guard is comparable to the French Gendarmerie and the Italian Carabinieri. Motto  El Honor es mi Divisa (Honour is my Emblem).

     Simbol Guardie Civil se sastoji od Španjolske kraljevske krune, mača i fascesa. Njeni pripadnici, zvani "numeros" brojevi, zadržali su do danas uobičajeni način patroliranja, po dvojica ("pareha", par). Vrlo često pripadnici garde sa svojim familijama i žive u kasarnama (casa-cuartel). Tradicionalna kapa im je troroga "tricornio". Pripadnici Guardie su se iskazali borbom protiv banditizma i u svim ostalim zadacima koji su im dodjeljivani, često i preko njihovih redovitih zadataka. Danas su uglavnom (mada ne samo to) zaduženi i za sigurnost na auto-putovima, u operacijama  protiv šverca, protiv droge, kontrola i osiguranje graničnih prijelaza, protueksplozivna zaštita, osiguranje reda u ruralnim sredinama i naseljima manjim od 10000 stanovnika, protuterorizam, obalna straža, osiguranje španjolskih diplomatskih predstavništava po svijetu, obavještajna i protuobavještajna djelatnost i još puno, puno toga.

      The symbol of the Guardia Civil consists of the Royal Crown of Spain, a sword and a fasces. Its members, called 'numeros' (numbers), maintain to this date the basic patrol unit of two agents, usually called a "pareja" (a pair). Their precincts called "casa cuartel"  and members of the Guardia Civil often live in garrisons (casa-cuartel) with their families. Their traditional hat is the tricornio, originally a tricorne.

The Guardia Civil's proven effectiveness throughout history in controlling banditry and in addressing the subsequent challenges and tasks given them, meant that additional tasks have been added regularly to their job description. Today, they are primarily responsible for policing and/or safety regarding the following (but not limited to) areas and/or safety related: highway patrol, drugs and anti-smuggling operations, customs and ports of entry control, safety of prisons and safeguarding of prisoners, weapons licenses and arms control, security of border areas, bomb squad and explosives, security in rural areas and in locations with less than 10,000 inhabitants, anti-terrorism; coast guard, police deployments abroad (embassies); intelligence and counter-intelligence gathering.

     U korpusu postoje različite specjalne jedinice UEI (Unidad Especial de Intervención) - Specijalna interventna jedinica; TEDAX (Técnicos Especialistas en Desactivación de Artefactos Explosivos) - Protueksplozivna jedinica (EOD); GAR (Grupo de Acción Rápida (bivša Grupo Antiterrorista Rural)) protuteroristička jedinica; Guardia Civil del Mar - obalna straža; SEPRONA (Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza) - zaštita prirode; GEAS (Grupo Especial Actividades Subacuáticas) ronioci; Tráfico - kontrola auto cesta; Montaña - spašavanje u planinama; Servicio Aéreo - zrakoplovna jedinica; Servicio Cinecológico - jedinica vodiča službenih pasa (potraga za eksplozivom, drogom, ljudima) i GRS (Grupo Rural de Seguridad) interventna jedinica.

     Different special units have been added to the corps: UEI (Unidad Especial de Intervención) - Special Intervention Unit,a Special Forces unit; TEDAX (Técnicos Especialistas en Desactivación de Artefactos Explosivos) - Explosive Artifacts Defuser Specialised Technicians (EOD); GAR (Grupo de Acción Rápida (ex. Grupo Antiterrorista Rural)) Antiterrorist Unit; Guardia Civil del Mar - Seashore surveillance and security of ports and harbours; SEPRONA (Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza) - Nature Protection Sevice, for environmental protection; GEAS (Grupo Especial Actividades Subacuáticas) – Divers; Tráfico - Control of freeways and highways; Montaña - Mountain Rescue; Servicio Aéreo - Aerial monitoring (normally from helicopters); Servicio Cinecológico Unit K-9 Drug detection and explosives and people and GRS (Grupo Rural de Seguridad) Anti-riot Unit.
