Formed in 1918 out of volunteers of the region of Podhale, in 1919 the smaller detachments of Podhale Rifles were pressed into two mountain infantry divisions, the 21st Mountain Infantry and 22nd Mountain Infantry Divisions, as well as into three brigades of mountain infantry and were considered elite units of the Polish Army.

On May 6, 1993, by order of the Chief of the General Staff, the 1st Podhale Rifle Battalion (1. Batalion Strzelców Podhalańskich, 1bSP) was formed, forming part of the 21st Podhale Rifle Brigade. A year later, the Minister of National Defense, by decision No. 44 of May 12, ordered the 1st Podhale Rifle Battalion of Rzeszów to take the name of Brig. Gen. Józef Kustron.

In December 2011 the Żandarmeria Wojskowa has made application to the European Gendarmerie Force to become a full member state. The ŻW is organized into: Headquarters, 3 special units, 10 regular units, 2 departments and 45 regional stations.
