Law enforcement in Turkey is carried out by several departments and
agencies, all acting under the Ministry of Internal Affairs except
military police which is under the command of the Turkish Armed Forces
and the National Intelligence Organization which directly reports to the
president. Among other agencies are: the General Directorate of Security
(Emniyet Genel Müdürlüğü); the Gendarmerie General Command (Jandarma
Genel Komutanlığı); The Coast Guard Command (Sahil Güvenlik Komutanlığı);
Military Police (Askeri İnzibat); the National Intelligence Organization
(Milli İstihbarat Teşkilatı, or MİT); Municipal police (Belediye
zabıtası); Village guards (Köy Koruyucusu) and others. |
