ROYAL GUARDS   KRALJEVSKA GARDA   Den Kongelige Livgarde

Den Kongelige Livgarde (The Royal Guards) is an infantry regiment of the Royal Danish Army, formed in 1658. The regiment was founded by King Frederik III and was charged with both being an infantry regiment (a front line combat unit) and as a guard for the Danish Monarch (as a guard/ceremonial unit). The ordinary uniform of the Royal Guards while they are on guard duty is dark blue. Their full dress uniform is very similar to that of the Foot Guards regiments of the British Army: a scarlet tunic; blue trousers; and a bearskin with the regiment's cap badge (the Sun and Royal Coat of Arms); together with the symbolic gardersabel (Guards sabre), which is part of the spoils from the First Schleswig War 1848-1850 and originally a French infantry sabre. During his time in the Danish forces, Crown Prince Frederik served a tour in the Royal Guards with the rank of Sergeant.

Prinsens Livregiment (English: The Prince's Life Regiment) was the army's sole line infantry regiment, and is named for Prince Henrik, the husband of Queen Margrethe II. The motto of the regiment was "Gloria Finis" (Honor above all). The regiment was formed in 2000 through the amalgamation of the original Prince's Life Regiment with two other regiments: Slesvigske Fodregiment - Schleswig Foot Regiment  and Dronningens Livregiment - Queen's Life Regiment.  The regiment was founded during the reign of King Frederik III in 1657 under the command of Ernst Albrecht von Eberstein. Over the years it has undergone many changes of name, the last taking place in 1961. In August 2006, the regiment was amalgamated with Jydske Dragonregiment and its Battalions disbanded.

Gardehusarregimentet (English: Guard Hussar Regiment) is one of two cavalry regiments of the Royal Danish Army. Its name is often abbreviated GHR. It was formed in 2001 through the amalgamation of the original Guard Hussars with two infantry regiments: Sjællandske Livregiment (Zealand Life Regiment) and Danske Liveregiment (Danish Life Regiment). Although the Guard Hussars themselves date from 1762, the Danish Army takes the date of the founding of a regiment from its oldest part, in this case the Zealand Life Regiment, which was founded in 1614. This makes the Guard Hussars the oldest regiment of hussars in the world still operational. In addition to its operational role, the Guard Hussar Regiment is one of two regiments in the Danish Army (along with the Den Kongelige Livgarde) to be classed as 'Guards'; in this case, the Guard Hussars perform the same role as the Household Cavlary do in the British Army. The ceremonial uniform of the Guard Hussar Regiment dates from 1860. The motto of the regiment is not in Danish but in Latin: In actis esto volucris, which translates to Be swift in action. Today the Gardehusarregiment is classed as a cavalry regiment, it is in fact a mixed armoured and infantry unit, with four battalions: 1st Battalion - Armoured Infantry; 2nd Battalion – Training; 3rd Battalion – Reconnaissance and 4th Battalion – Training.

The name "hussars" originally comes from the Hungarian word "husz", that means twenty, since every twenty farms in Hungary should provide a horse soldier.
